Nature Conservation in Action

Did you know there are around 30 nature reserves laid out around the edge of Morecambe Bay? The natural jewels of the crown!

Such a special place takes a lot of looking after to help it stay that way.

The bay and it’s habitats are protected by national and international legislation which puts great responsibility on the landowners and managers in the area.

A combination of public, charity and private landowners all work together to help protect the unique nature of the bay. You’ll find the usual suspects like National Trust, RSPB, The Wildlife Trusts, Natural England and Butterfly Conservation working alongside the Arnside and Silverdale AONB and Morecambe Bay Partnership teams. And let’s not forget the farmers and foresters who also work the land, and the army of volunteers who support the conservation bodies. It’s a real team effort.

Lots of manual labour and careful grazing management help to maintain the unique mosaic of habitats and species around the bay.

As part of a NaturesGems experience you will learn about the management of the sites we visit to help raise awareness of Morecambe Bay’s conservation heroes and the hidden stories behind what goes in to keeping the area so special.

5% of NaturesGems income will go directly to conservation projects around the bay to help support the continuation of this vital work.
